Metropolitan CEO job to remain localised

Metropolitan Botswana has said it will not de-localise the position of managing director, which fell vacant following the departure of its former managing director, Nathan Kgabi.

Officials of the Metropolitan’s parent company in Cape Town confirmed that they have begun looking for a citizen with insurance experience to replace Kgabi.

“At this stage I do not know who will be appointed, but the advertisements have been sent out and we have advertised the position widely,” Gregory Beck, head of Metropolitan Industrial Relations based in Cape Town said yesterday.

Beck said that as soon as the screening identifies a suitable candidate, an announcement would be made.

Kgabi resigned from Metropolitan Botswana a few weeks back citing personal reasons for his departure.

The youthful Kgabi has only been at the insurer less than two years when he left his employ.

Before joining Metropolitan, he was the managing director of CBET, a company that publishes Botswana Guardian and Midweek Sun. He has also worked for Botswana Confederation of Commerce Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM), Standard Chartered Bank, Botswana National Productivity Centre and Botswana Institute of Accountants.

Beck said that he expects that the position will not be de-localised.

Metropolitan Botswana is partly owned by Metropolitan South Africa (75 percent) while the rest (25 percent) is owned by the government’s investment arm - Botswana Development Corporation (BDC).
