A guide to the Zebras line-up

10/7/2005 3:03:36 PM (GMT +2)

On the eve of Botswana encounter with Guinea, KAGISO SEKOKONYANE and TSHEPO MOLWANE pick a possible Zebras’ line up

The Zebras welcome Guinea in the last match of the 2006 World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifiers at the National Stadium tomorrow.

This match is of no significance to the Zebras, as they would not qualify for the African Cup of Nations even if they bury the visitors in an avalanche of goals. But it is important for the Zebras to end the qualifiers on a high note. Tomorrow’s match should be used to celebrate the much- improved performance of the country in football and avenge the 4-0 defeat the Syli Stars inflicted on the Zebras in Conakry.

Obviously, coach Veselin Jelusic would come up with a winning team to ensure that the Zebras send Guinea packing.

On the bench, the team has talented replacements who could be called to duty in case those in the starting line-up fail to produce the goods.

1- Kagiso Tshelametsi

In the absence of trusted goalkeeper and captain, Modiri Marumo, Tshelametsi is the only man who can guard the post in a match of this magnitude. His confidence works wonders for him. He is a brilliant shot stopper. The nation likes him hence his return to the national team after announcing his retirement last month.

2- Khumo Motlhabane

He has sacrificed a lot for the Zebras and deserves credit for this, especially because he is not a favourite of some fans. A dedicated defender who every coach would like to have in his team. ‘Shoes’ must guard against the speedy Guineans who can expose him with pace.

3- Mompati Thuma

In the absence of Pius Kolagano, the Mogoditshane Fighters’ defender has come in and fitted well in the Zebras’ defence like a hand in glove. He is a hard worker and a no-nonsense defender. But Thuma needs to guard against his tackles, which can be very reckless at times.

4- Seabo Gabanakgosi

Missed the Namibian match last week because of flu. Tomorrow, the towering defender is expected to return to the team though it seems he has not fully recovered. The Zebras will need him when it comes to aerial battles. If he fails to make the team, Ndiyapo Letsholathebe will have to be called to replace him.

5- Ernest Amos

A reliable servant at the heart of the Zebras’ defence. If he is fully focused against Guinea, Jelusic needs not to worry about the marauding West African attackers.

6- Masego Ntshingane

Thank God, the crafty Ntshingane seems to be on top of his game. It is unfortunate that he found his footing when the qualifiers are coming to an end. In tomorrow’s clash, he will surely call the shots from the middle of the pack. The coach must encourage him to push forward more and get goals.

7- Moemedi Moatlhaping

What a player! The nation needs the input of this youngster in order to pull what seems like an impossible victory. ‘Jomo’ must know that he has talent and

he should use it to the best of his abilities. If he clicks tomorrow, surely the visitors are condemned.

8- Mogogi Gabonamong

With Michael Mogaladi and Tshepo Motlhabankwe being relegated to the bench, this is the man who can play a holding role tomorrow. He is a hard worker who will give Ntshingane a chance to push forward on the day. Returns from suspension after being sent-off against Malawi in Blantyre. Another fan favourite who was given a huge applause on his return against Namibia during independence celebrations.

9- Tshepiso Molwantwa

He did not play last weekend because he was not well. Surely, Molwantwa will be back for this match. He has speed and an eye for goal that can bring smiles to the thousands who will throng the National Stadium. If he shows the same hunger he displayed against Malawi, the nation will celebrate one of Molwantwa’s goals. Go for it Sox.

10- Diphetogo Selolwane

He has put balls past many goalkeepers in the qualifiers and tomorrow will be no exception. ‘Dipsy’ has to go out there and enjoy himself. If he clicks, definitely Molwantwa will be up to the task. Selolwane has to know that as captain of the team, he must lead by example. A goal from him will make Batswana happy.

11- Tebogo Mothusi

In the eyes of many, he would be a surprise inclusion. But Mothusi deserves a chance to once again perform in front of an ecstatic home fans. On the few occasions he has been fielded, ‘Panapana’ has not disappointed. It will be ideal to field him especially because Nelson Gabolwelwe’s form has gone down.
