Bring everyone on board

With regard to an article which appeared on the Gazette titled “Architects Act to be enacted soon?” I feel the Architect Association of Botswana (AAB) has taken a positive step towards quality assurance and in achieving professional competence. I’m of the opinion that this action lacks some merit in that other professions (like Quantity Surveying, Civil engineering, Landscape architecture, Construction and project management and Property Valuation) which are also involved in the building process have been left out. It would have been more appropriate if AAB could have teamed up with other Botswana professional bodies in the construction industry and form one statutory body which would regulate all activities in the built environment. A suggestion would be to call this body “The Council for the Construction Industry” which looks after the interest of everyone in the construction industry that is to say clients, professionals and the general public.

This move would go a long way in ensuring that total quality is achieved in the construction industry and also put quantity surveying, architectural, property valuation and civil engineering firms which originate in Botswana in a position to form consortiums with foreign based firms for larger projects outside our borders.
