The performance of both sides did not disappoint in the well-attended game. Police showed their determination from the onset. Even though they did not pocket anything in the first inning they were all over Wells, and credit should go to their player-coach James Gunda. In spite of his ripe age, his pitching was too hot to handle for Wells players. The second inning was a one-sided affair and Police took home two points. Gunda’s pitching was even more dangerous. Other players like Thato Mathake and John ‘Ninja’ Nkwane were also outstanding in the second inning as Police threatened to run riot.
But Wells fought back in the third inning which ended pointless. The fourth inning was a different story as the Jwaneng side levelled matters, taking advantage of a shaky Police defence. Offensive players like Ross Mosupakwena and Boy Boy Tlhobogang were the driving force for Wells.
Police IX turned the tables in the fourth inning and netted two points. They kept a heavily armed guard on the crucial first and third base. The sixth inning did not produce any point but the seventh one gave spectators the real action. Police went into the inning defending a 5-2 lead.
Wells surprised many as they nearly forced the game to the eighth inning. But the team faltered when it mattered most.
After the game, Gunda said they have a lot to do if they are to win their forthcoming games. “I thank my boys for a good performance. They played well as compared to last week against BDF. In our game against BDF, we were strong at the back and weak upfront. If you have a weaker offensive, it is not easy to win. We then worked on our offensive and produced something. Even though we won, we have a lot to work on. My offensive is not in the shape that I want,” he said.
For Wells it was a bitter pill to swallow as they conceded their second consecutive defeat. Last week they lost to Bears 7-5.
In the women’s game, Wells team humiliated Police 13-5.
In another men’s game Paper club’s men team continues to excel as they won their second consecutive game against Gabane 9-5. Paper coach Sthanda Kgosiyang said the game was a one-sided affair in which they led 9-0 at one stage.
