BNOC Throws Out Old Committee

At the end of historic elections last Thursday, only one man in the old Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) was left standing. BNOC president, Negroes Kgosietsile is the only member of the old executive still in office after his colleagues either failed to seek re-election or were swept aside.

The elections were held at the Tlotlo Conference Centre in Gaborone. Since its establishment, BNOC has never held an open Annual General Meeting in which affiliates gathered to elect officials. Moses Bantsi of the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) said this time, affiliates had to speak with one voice to force the BNOC officials to act in a transparent manner.

After BNOC vice president, Ashford Mamelodi declined to defend his seat, University of Botswana’s Dr Martin Mokgwathi had a free ride. But Moses Moruise (Athletics) needed two rounds of voting to become secretary general in a tough contest. In the first round, he tied on 10 votes with France Mabiletsa, a member of the old committee in a race that included incumbent Robert Chideka and Marang Morakaladi from karate. But in the second half he scooped 18 votes to Mabiletsa’s 9.

Before the AGM, Mabiletsa had learnt that he will no longer be the chef de mission for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 2006. Mabiletsa has been chef de mission twice but this time outgoing BNOC publicity secretary Tiyapo Mokobi was roped in his place by the old committee.

Solly Reikeletseng (karate) has replaced Mokobi as BNOC publicity secretary. He beat Mokobi, Chideka, and former Botswana National Sports Council spokesman, James Molosankwe. Reikeletseng tied with Molosankwe in the first round with 10 votes but won 16 to 11. Outgoing treasurer, Andrew Mokoto was not nominated for the position and stood for additional member’s position. However Marang Morakaladi (18 votes) Refilwe Segokgo (17 votes) and Chideka (16) won the race for the three slots for additional members.
