Parliament can question cabinet decisions - Magang
Former cabinet minister, David Magang says it is wrong to suggest that Parliament cannot question decisions of the executive. “According to Section 86 of the Constitution, the legislative power of Parliament is unlimited. It is only limited where it is in breach of the Constitution,” Magang told Mmegi yesterday.

Court of Appeal reserves judgment in rape case
The Court of Appeal has reserved judgement in a case where a man is seeking to overturn two jail sentences for rape and armed robbery. Justice Patrick Tebutt listened to the appeal of Oliver Mogotsi yesterday and said the convict would know his fate in due course.

Convict escapes the cane
Goitsemodimo Morapedi, a man in jail for among others, unlawful possession of arms and armed robbery has been spared the wrath of the cane-man.

Chiefs deny political interest
FRANCISTOWN: Bangwaketse and Barolong paramount chiefs have dismissed reports that they are interested in joining active politics. Speaking to Mmegi yesterday, Bangwaketse chief, Kgosi Seepapitso IV dismissed allegations that he was associated with a major opposition party in the country. He said the allegations are unfounded lies.

Med Rescue boss calls for research to prevent crime
The Managing Director of Medical Rescue International Botswana, Phillip Makgalemele has called for research to determine business opportunities for the youth in the districts to curb crime. He urged the police and the District Labour officers to conduct research in conjunction with the Department of Youth and Culture and Botswana National Youth Council.

MP to seek amendment of Marital Bill again
SELEBI-PHIKWE: Selebi-Phikwe East MP, Nonofho Molefhi has said he will press for an amendment of the Abolition of Marital Power Bill after his first attempt failed last year. He said yesterday that he would make further consultations with both the cultural and Christian organisations and then try to get Parliament to amend the controversial Bill.

Suspicions of abortion in grisly death
FRANCISTOWN: A Phase-Six resident has said that the middle-aged woman whose decomposed and dismembered body parts were fished from pit-latrines in the estate last Friday, died in the hands of a certain abortionist. A woman in her early thirties told Mmegi that she had previously lost two of her friends after the same backyard abortionist in Phase Six consulted them.

Villagers react to Abolition of Marital Power Bill
BOROLONG: The recently passed Abolition of Marital Power Bill has sparked controversy among the young and the old. The Bill tabled by the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Major General Moeng Pheto is meant to abolish the common law practice granting a husband marital power over his wife and her property.
