The Managing Director of Medical Rescue International Botswana, Phillip Makgalemele has called for research to determine business opportunities for the youth in the districts to curb crime. He urged the police and the District Labour officers to conduct research in conjunction with the Department of Youth and Culture and Botswana National Youth Council.

Makgalemele, the Botswana Football Association (BFA) president was speaking during a crime prevention workshop in Tsetsebye on Saturday. The workshop was organised by the Botswana Police and mainly targeted the youth. Participants were drawn from Tsetsebye, Bobonong, Sefhophe and Selebi Phikwe.

Makgalemele, who was guest speaker expressed worry at the rate at which the youth indulge in crime, teenage pregnancies and spread of HIV/AIDS. He demonstrated how crime adversely affects the country’s economy as it leads to loss of property, businesses and education opportunities; and high insurance premiums. It also drives away investors. He urged the youth to make use of government programmes under the revised policy for rural development, poverty reduction strategy among others. He encouraged the revival of the spirit of partnership and told the youth to come up with initiatives to open small businesses and create employment.

The theme of the workshop was: Youth, Crime and Economy, What is our Way forward? It was meant to trigger the youth’s appreciation of the fact that they are dependent on the economy hence, they should shy away from criminal activities. The workshop sought to establish the cause and effects of crime and the solutions.
