Beware, the pitfalls of privatisation
Developing countries are genius of many extremes. Africa is a candidate in this regard: endless civil wars, dictatorial governments, frequent military coups, high unemployment rate, high illiteracy rate, poverty, skyrocketing crime rates and millions of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. These have adversely paralysed many African economies since independence.

Consumerism can be defeated
Consumerism is a disease. Consumers are at the mercy of the advertiser. Impulse buying and constant buying is due to the belief, often held subconsciously, that to buy and own in large quantities is the equivalent of finding happiness.

Readers deserve better
Increasingly, the local media is moving towards stereotyping certain individuals or segments of our society. A typical example is an article titled “Old Naledi residents in the dark over budget” that appeared on last Friday’s edition of Mmegi.
