BDP dismisses Mzwinila’s appeal

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) yesterday dismissed an election appeal by the losing party youth faction led by Kefentse Mzwinila.

BDP executive secretary, Dr Comma Serema confirmed to Mmegi yesterday that a decision has been taken to end the long running youth battle. Though he declined to divulge details as the affected parties have not been informed, sources revealed that the appeal failed. “We will issue a press statement tomorrow after possibly delivering the letters to the concerned parties,” Serema said.

Meanwhile, Mzwinila said that he has heard a rumour that he has lost the case. “I can’t react to rumours as I don’t know whether that is true or not,” he said. Last month, Mzwinila told Mmegi that he was pleased at the way a committee of four selected to look into the matter was doing its work. “At least, I have had an opportunity to point out the irregularities that I have noted at the BDP Youth Wing Congress last July,” he said last month.

The decision to throw out the petition follows a meeting between a sub-committee of the BDP Political Education and Elections Committee (PEEC) and the Central Committee held at Oasis Lodge in Tlokweng, yesterday. The sub-committee was headed by PEEC boss, Bernard Bolele, Sonny Bakwena, Veronicah Lesole and Godiramang Makhaya. The committee was selected to hear the appeal filed by a faction led by Mzwinila, who lost in the BDP youth elections in Kasane last July. The elections were won by Peter Meswele and his allies. Mzwinila and his group appealed citing a number of irregularities.
