FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), executive secretary, Dr. Comma Serema has dismissed a letter circulating in the party claiming that a number of changes are in the offing.

“We have the letter, and it has no traceable origin. We take it that these are some of the things that people who are out to tarnish the good image of the BDP and its leadership can do,” he said. The letter addressed to the editor Monitor, dated January 6 and authored by Bernard Maposa, was published by the paper on February 7. Among others the letter said that certain politicians, ministers, MPs and administrators should be dealt with for being in the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction while those in the dominant faction Mogae-Khama should be promoted or given business contracts. The letter reads in part: “My friend, Peter Ngoma (ex-Francistown mayor and now nominated councillor) told me that the Mogae-Khama faction held a meeting in Serowe recently during the BDP youth music competition and agreed on a number of issues.” Serema dismissed the letter saying that what it says is not the way the BDP was running its affairs and government. “The decisions purported to have been taken as per the letter, are totally false. This is a continued pattern of people attempting to damage the reputation of the BDP. As the secretariat, we are obviously not happy.” Serema indicated that efforts to trace the origin of the letter were fruitless as the author could not be located. The party believed the author could have used a pseudonym.

Lands and Housing Minister, Ramadeluka Seretse recently dismissed the letter as false and misleading. He said he has never attended any meeting at which decisions purported to have been taken in the letter were made.

Seretse was itching to see the letter and its author. He wondered what could have influenced the author to come up with such false and malicious statements.

Labour and Home Affairs Minister, Moeng Pheto denied in an interview that he attended a party meeting in Serowe as alleged in the letter. “My guess is that 99.9 percent of issues mentioned in that letter as I have had an opportunity to read it myself, are probably false.”

Southern District Council chairman, Kentse Rammidi disassociated himself from the meetings alleged by Maposa. “I was shocked to learn from the letter that I had attended meetings in Serowe last year, where certain decisions were made. That’s a lie,” stressed Rammidi. He however, explained that he met with a number of party colleagues in Serowe and that could not have been mistaken for a party meeting. “Who is this Maposa? He should be exposed and answer for his misdeeds.”

Ngoma told Monitor that he was not willing to comment. “ I am not ready to comment on that letter or anything that you would inquire from me for that matter.”
