Kgosipula’s dilemma

8/17/2005 2:53:16 PM (GMT +2)

Recent media reports indicate that the former Botswana Congress Party secretary general Mokgweetsi Kgosipula is about to rejoin the Botswana National Front (BNF). The fact that Kgosipula refused to deny or confirm these allegations seems to suggest that the allegations might be true. It is further alleged that even BNF members are aware of this coming and prepared for his welcome.

Kgosipula has explained his decline to stand for reelection on irreconcilable differences with the newly elected BCP leader Gilson Saleshando. Kgosipula has said that while he subscribes to the idea of opposition cooperation, Saleshando is opposed to it. He said he declined to stand in the best interest of the party.

If Kgosipula really wants to see opposition parties cooperating, why should he move to another opposition party? For Kgosipula to leave BCP (if at all the allegations are true, and one hopes they are false) just because of one person makes little sense to me. It does not come across as the action of someone who really has the interests of the party at heart like he alleges. Indeed, he can still contribute through other party structures such as ward, constituency and regional committees to see his dream of opposition parties cooperating realised.

It might be that Kgosipula is motivated and encouraged by the return to parliament of his former comrades who had rejoined the BNF from BCP. He probably thinks that since he has lost twice under the BCP, going back to the BNF is the answer to his perennial losses. But that would be opportunism. What is surprising is that Kgosipula might be leaving BCP at a time when opposition parties are more than ever considering working together to oust the Botswana Democratic Party. Does Kgosipula imply that opposition cooperation has failed? I wish to urge Kgosipula to rethink his plan. Comrade, reconsider your plan. I hope all these allegations are not true.
