The villagers are not happy with the incessant shortages of water. They said that they are tired of always lining up at the water tanks waiting to fetch water. One resident, Charles Jonas said that children now take advantage of the shortage to avoid carrying household chores because they while away time near the tanks. “This shortage has resulted in children abandoning their duties and playing truant at the water source. Shortage of water is prevalent here as you can see. Gardens are dry and those who make a living by selling vegetables are doomed. This village as a whole is like a desert, every thing is dry,” Jonas lamented.
A resident known as Mma-Lesang said that they are tired of fetching water from distant places. “Fetching water is a day’s work nowadays because we spend a lot of time lining up and by the time we reach home, we are so tired we can’t do anything else, imagine walking for some kilometres with a wheelbarrow carrying four 20-litre water jerricans,” she said. Mma-Lesang pointed out that the children have developed a bad habit of going to play at the water source. She lamented that the shortage has resulted in children fighting with each other and sowing seeds of discord between parents.
Another resident Getty Mpuchani said that she was not in a position to comment on the issue of water because she is used to the suffering that comes with it. She told Mmegi that the authorities do not care about their well-being and she has since stopped whining about water. “Why do I have to worry about the state of water in this village when those responsible do not care? We have long tried to register our grievances but nothing sensible is being done. We are waiting for those with means to come up with a different alternative but until then, lining up for water will be our daily duty,” she said.
When reached for comment, North-East district council secretary, Boipolelo Khumomatlhare said that he was not in a position to comment on the issue saying that he was still new at his station. He promised to follow up the issue until he has something concrete to say to the media. “I am not in a position to answer to that because I’m new in this area, but I will talk to the senior water engineer to brief me on that and I will give you feedback,” he said.
