“I actually went to his premises yesterday where I reminded him of the provisions of his trading licence,” he pointed out. He added that after talking to him, Khan agreed that refilling gas cylinders at his premises can cause a fire. “He even said that he was sorry and would never repeat it.”
Khan said he met with the deputy town clerk, Sonny Chiliwa and promised him that he would never refill cylinders again at his premise. But he insisted that the trading licence is silent on whether he is restricted to selling already filled cylinders because it only states that he is involved in ‘gas supply’ without elaborating.
Before, this people like Frank Ramoleele lived in fear that his liquor bar and other nearby buildings are likely to catch fire anytime. This is because Power Gas, refilled gas cylinders in the vicinity. He claimed that some patrons stopped coming to the bar because of the danger from Power Gas. He complained to the council, the fire department, Tati police and area councillor, Sam Masunga. He even raised the issue with the Francistown East MP and cabinet minister, Phandu Skelemani in a Kgotla meeting last month. The councillor said he talked to Khan who agreed to stop refilling the cylinders. “When I passed by the next day, I smelt gas and wondered if the supplier is still refilling. Then I took the matter to the by-law officers who in turn came to talk to him about the issue. I learnt that he told them that he would never refill,” the councillor said.
