With a lot of pageants taking place, there is always room for one more. The young and vibrant are eager to change the way beauty pageants are perceived - the stereotypical thinking that makes pageants look like child’s play with no bearing on the country’s growth whatsoever.

In the minds of two youthful dreamers, 25-year-old Bryan Kusane and 21-year-old Ellonah Seleka, beauty pageants have a lot to offer.

The two believe a country can achieve a lot by using beauty queens as their ambassadors. The country already has a number of registered pageantries including Miss Botswana and Miss Universe Botswana, which groom locals to compete in the global pageants namely Miss World and Miss Universe.

These two however chose to begin small, but with big ideas. Kusane and Seleka have successfully reserved rights to yet another beauty pageant, Miss Gaborone; sounds small, but the two are adamant that their project will bear valuable fruits for the country. The duo said they intend to make people appreciate that beauty queens can make a difference to the country’s growth. Contrary to perceptions held by some people that beauty pageants are all about brainless beauty with nothing valuable to offer, they have already started their search for Miss Gaborone.

Their pageant - unlike other pageants - has a theme, that is ‘Hidden Treasure Gaborone’ the reason being that even though Gaborone is the centre of everything, they feel it is not promoted enough, to attract both tourists and investors. As such, the two started this pageant with intentions to promoting Gaborone. They told Mmegi that they are looking for someone who is very hard working, to be able to carry out the mandate of Miss Gaborone.

Candidates who will stand a chance to participate in the pageant should be self-driven, well spoken and best of all have confidence in themselves.

“We want to give people a reason to appreciate Miss Gaborone,” Seleka said.

The victorious woman will be faced with a big challenge ahead, of doing a lot of research, aimed at luring investors and tourists to Gaborone; most importantly the beauty queen will be expected to unveil the hidden treasures of Gaborone and make them known to the public. The duo said they have managed to get a few sponsors but are still looking for more. The pageant is scheduled for October 29, and it is deemed to have lots of entertainment, including a performance by Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
