BAM, BDP battle for Tsau ward

FRANCISTOWN: The race for the Tsau ward in Ngami constituency has started, four weeks after the death of area councillor, Monoka Maha of the Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM).

The deceased made history in the last general elections by grabbing the seat from the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) for the first time. He died at the end of March after a short illness.

Reports reaching Mmegi show that former BDP Ngami branch chairman, Banni Mokgadi has jumped ship to BAM to contest the seat.

He is alleged to be the only one so far who has registered interest to represent BAM in the impending by-election.

Local Government Minister, Margaret Nasha is yet to issue a writ for the by-election.

“We have given the party structures in the area a chance to hold primaries if there is more than one candidate vying for the ward,” BAM secretary general, Matlhomola Modise said yesterday. He was not certain if the party has already decided on a candidate.

Modise stressed that when the time comes, BAM will be ready to do battle in the ward. He said since his party has proved to be a strong contender in the area, their plan is to retain the ward. BDP executive secretary, Dr Comma Serema said yesterday that his party has started working hard in the area to recapture the ward.

“We have started mobilising in Tsau, Semboyo and Makakung. We recently distributed forms to interested parties to apply for the Bulela Ditswe primaries.” Serema said they have reminded party faithful about the rules and regulations of Bulela Ditswe.

“We urge our people to accept defeat and avoid unnecessary frictions. Our view is that BAM is an irrelevant party and we think we are going to beat it at the game this time around.”
