Zambia to bid for Nations Cup

9/2/2004 1:12:54 AM (GMT +2)

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) will bid to host the 2010 African Cup of Nations. “As FAZ, we have made a decision that we must bid for the 2010 African Cup of Nations,” said FAZ spokesperson Mwansa Mbulakulima.

This follows a recent meeting between FAZ and members of Zambia’s business community who are expected to support the bid. Zambia’s move has also been influenced by FIFA’s decision to award the 2010 World Cup finals to nearby South Africa. Mbulakulima added: “Since the world’s attention will be on Southern Africa in 2010, there couldn’t be a better opportunity for us to bid. “Besides, we are the only great footballing nation in Africa that hasn’t hosted the Nations Cup.” Zambia won the right to host the Cup of Nations in 1988 but financial problems forced the country to cede it to Morocco. Three committees have been set up to work on plans for a formal 2010 bid and have been given two weeks to draw up their recommendations. (BBC)
