Roma grabs Mido Hossam

9/2/2004 1:12:01 AM (GMT +2)

Marseille’s Egyptian striker Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam has signed for Italian team AS Roma. Roma said they had paid Marseille US $7.3 million for the 21-year-old, who joined the French first division side last year after spells at Ajax Amsterdam and Celta Vigo.

Mido has signed a five-year contract with an annual salary of US $2.25 million .

Roma appointed former Germany manager Rudi Voeller as coach on Tuesday in place of Cesare Prandelli who resigned for family reasons last week.

Mido had been linked with a move to English Premiership side Manchester City but the deal fell through because the player appeared keen to stay with Marseille.

The young striker has been plagued by injury in recent months, with his latest groin problem forcing him to withdraw from Egypt’s 2006 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon. (BBC)
