Arts/Culture Review
P-side crew sets record straight

9/2/2004 12:25:54 AM (GMT +2)

Your article entitled “Hip Hop night of farce” in your 27th August Arts and Culture edition contains some inaccuracies, which we wish to set right.

Firstly, the author mentions that “...the P-side crew...walked out after Persley “Prez Beats” Metshe from the P-Side crew lost to David “Draztik” Baucher of Cashless Society.” The truth is that the representatives from P-Side stayed on until the end of the show. The people who walked out were Presley’s fans, hangers-on (as you prefer to call them) and representatives from the Eric Ramco Records Company, including Eric Ramogobya who again you wrongly identified as a P-Side producer.

It follows that P-Side as the oldest Hip Hop outfit in the country has seen most of the current faces in the country’s hip hop arena pass through it.

The result is that most are still identified with P-Side despite the fact that they have moved on and are no longer directly part of the organisation.

Regarding the awards, P-Side was disappointed at the way they went. Just like many other artists and stakeholders, we feel that some awards were wrongly allocated.

For instance we do believe that Orakle deserved at least to have been nominated for lyricist of the year, we believe that Mr. T should have won the Album of the year award and yes we believe that Presley should have won the Producer of the year award. That not withstanding, we do not believe that this disappointment warranted a childish show of emotion, which you attribute to us.

Despite our disappointment, we are satisfied in the selection process and the selection committee, which was responsible for the selection. The selection committee consisted of and represented the entire spectrum of the Entertainment Industry in Botswana including the media. That we differ with them is a question of opinion and is neither here nor there.

In conclusion, P-Side wishes to congratulate the organisers of the first ever Botswana Hip-Hop Music Awards, the event was well organised, well attended and of extremely high quality.

We do look forward to the sophomore show and hope that the show grows from height to height. We also wish to congratulate the award winners and look forward to tighter competition next year.
