The Church at war with itself The history of the Christian Church, in its various formations, is full of antagonism and splits. It goes back many centuries. There was the schism between the Eastern and Western churches, thought to have occurred around 1054. There were many factors that led to the division of the Church, and they included differences of philosophical understanding, liturgical usage, language, custom and political rivalries.
