“We do it for the love of the game. We love playing ball. We are not going to give up easily,” says Ramollwana.
The team was formed last year and it is struggling to make ends meet. They survive by making small contributions. “There are only a few of us who are working. We raise funds by contributing P1 each Friday. Sometimes we cook food and we sell it amongst ourselves. On other occasions, those who are working foot the team’s bill,” explains Ramollwana.
The team uses the name Moshupa but it is based in Old Naledi. “We knew it was going to take us a long time to register and we approached Moshupa Lovers Sporting Club so that we could register under them,” she said. The team has been lucky as the Deputy City Mayor, Ezekiel Dube came to their rescue and bought them a kit. “We need another one but we don’t have money. We are still trying to collect some money,” Ramollwana says.
Meanwhile, the Southern League Debswana Tournament continued over the weekend. Lovers had a repeat of the bad days when BDF Cats hammered them 86-7. Their woes were compounded when Jwaneng Netball Club hit them 79-21.
It was a game that Jwaneng took very lightly. If they had put more effort, they would have scored more goals. Though Botlhale Moeng of Jwaneng was not at her best, the Lovers duo of Sedidi Tlhasedi and Irene Matlou were caught napping most of the time.
In the other games, Centre Chiefs beat Jwaneng Youngsters 50-17. Notwane scraped through with a two points lead over BDF Cats. A game between the two sides is never easy.
Debswana has sponsored the tournament to the tune of P40,000. The finals are scheduled for the weekend of November 13-14. The top four teams from Southern and Northern regions will meet to decide the winner.
