BCP to brainstorm on election results

FRANCISTOWN: When the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) leadership meet in a fortnight in Gaborone, for a postmortem of the weekend polls, the issue of opposition unity is likely to dominate their discussions. BCP publicity secretary Dumelang Saleshando said some party members are likely to raise the issue of unity at the meeting following the party’s unflattering performance at the parliamentary polls.

Generally, vote splitting has been blamed for the opposition’s weak performance at the weekend elections. “In the past, we have never said unity is inherently bad. Without going into the agenda of the envisaged meeting, we are going to look at the issue of opposition unity critically,” Saleshando said.

The BCP’s elections evaluation meeting was supposed to be held this weekend but has been postponed to November 20. “We have not had enough time to critically review our performance in the general elections as the party leadership, as such we need more time to have an in-depth analysis of the results,” explained Saleshando, the sole BCP MP after the elections.

He said that the electoral pact between the Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM), Botswana National Front (BNF) and Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) worked. “If at all the retreat endorses any form of cooperation with any opposition party, then we will have to come up with workable reforms to make the whole thing acceptable and results oriented,” asserted Saleshando who confirmed that unity doors are not closed at the BCP.

In 2001, the BCP congress in Mochudi rejected proposals for unity talks. The party membership insisted that they wanted to go into the elections single-handedly. Saleshando indicated that the party leadership would later call a national retreat to further analyse the elections.
