Another BCP man calls for unity

MAUN: Though he is over 60 years, he is energetic and a workaholic. He worked tirelessly canvassing for votes in the Maun West constituency for Botswana Congress Party (BCP) candidates. After the dismal performance of his party in the past election, Semahedi Basimane is now convinced that unity of opposition parties is the only way to wrestle power from the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

He is the second BCP politician to call for opposition unity after James Olesitse, who was the party’s parliamentary candidate for Palapye.

Basimane who is little known in political circles, told Mmegi that opportunistic and power hungry politicians in the opposition feel threatened in their positions of leadership.

“Power hungry politicians are only interested in filling their stomachs,” he said.

He felt that opposition parties should be funded by the government to mount their campaign countrywide.

The BCP man said his party has a strong and good leadership, but regretted that they started campaigning for the elections very late. He believes that BCP will win both Selebi-Phikwe East and West constituencies and Bobonong in the next elections. He said the removal of certain parts from Okavango constituency played a part in the loss of former MP Joseph Kavindama. “They are now happy because they wanted to remove Kavindama from parliament to reduce the number of BCP MPs,” he said.

He noted that the Botswana National Front (BNF) is growing rapidly in view of its impressive performance in parliamentary and council elections. “The opposition leaders should prepare ground work for the unity of parties. I campaigned vigorously for BCP because I know that it can change the welfare of Batswana for the better if given the mandate to rule this country,” he said.
