Despite having embarked on intensive campaigns in preparations for the general elections, the opposition have been routed in the two Selebi-Phikwe constituencies. The Botswana National Front (BNF) and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) won a few council seats in Selebi East and West constituencies.

Nonofo Molefhi of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) won Phikwe East parliamentary seat with 2,629 votes followed by BCP’s Nzwaligwa Nzwaligwa with 2,478 anad the BNF’s Poela Keotswetse with 1,231. Independent candidate Kabelo Gaseitsiwe got only 59 votes. In Selebi-Phikwe West, Kavis Kario of the BDP polled 3,100 votes to beat his more fancied opponents like BCP vice president’s Gilson Saleshando who polled 2802 votes and the pact presidential candidate and BNF leader Otsweletse Moupo with 1,489.

The BNF had fielded candidates in all the 14 wards in Phikwe East and West. BDP won four council seats while BCP got three in Phikwe West.

In the East, BCP won two wards and the BDP swept all the remaining five wards.

The ruling party have lost Thakadiawa ward held by the former deputy mayor Benjamin Bagayi to the BCP’s Evelyn Kgodungwe. The number of opposition councillors in the council have increased to five. The battle in the two constituencies was between the ruling party and the BCP, despite the fact that Selebi Phikwe is naturally a BNF stronghold.
