The power of the BDP plus the split vote made sure that the party won in traditional opposition strongholds like Gaborone North, Selebi-Phikwe, Francistown and Tati. But the BDP saw its grip loosened in the fickle Kgatleng area when it lost one and retained one constituency. Although threatened in Molepolole, the BDP’s GUS Matlhabaphiri emerged in one piece after a bloody encounter with the BNF’s Mohammed Khan. Matlhabaphiri polled 4,370 votes against Khan’s 3,912. It was a great sigh of relief for Matlhabaphiri who has been under tremendous pressure lately.
At the time of going to press, the BDP had secured victories in all the three Serowe constituencies by wide margins. The party looked on course to secure victories in its strongholds of Palapye, Tswapong South, Tswapong North, Mahalapye East and Mahalapye West. The BCP posed a serious challenge for the BDP in Tswapong South while the BNF competed well in the two Mahalapye constituencies. The BCP pulled one ward in Palapye, while the BNF got one each in Shoshong and Serowe North.
Althouth the BDP won comfortably in the two constituencies, the BNF posed a remote threat and its efforts were repaid by a council seat.
The BDP brushed aside the BCP’s impressive onslaught in Bobirwa where the Taolo Lucas managed to sneak in one council ward in a constituency traditionally known as a BDP bastion. The BDP’s Shaw Kgathi made it to Parliament after winning eight council wards out of nine.
The BDP was also challenged in the two Ghanzi constituencies and Kgalagadi South constituency where they eventually brushed aside the BNF.
The BDP struggled in Kanye, Ngwaketse, Gaborone West constituencies, Lobatse, Tlokweng and Gaborone South where the BNF swept the stakes.
