“We recognise the international code of ethics but we set a code of ethics for Botswana to ensure that it blends well with the set up of our society,” said Monyame. When performing the official launch, Monyame said the Code will act as a guideline for media practitioners. With the general elections approaching, media practitioners have been encouraged to use the Code as a guideline to ensure fair and accurate reporting.
Members of the Complaints and Appeals committees were also introduced at the launch. Both committees aim at hearing complaints and concerns raised by members of the public who have been aggrieved by the media. Instead of spending a lot of money going to the courts, members of the public can lodge their complaints with the committees. The complaints will be passed on to the Appeals Committee if the aggrieved person is not satisfied with the outcome of the Complaints Committee. The Complaints Committee consists of four media practitioners and four members of the public. They are Mpho Maine, Samuel Moribame, Laone Segaetsho, Dr Pinkie Mekgwe, Mookodi Seisa, Dr Raphael Dingalo, Mathiba Makoni and Max Garekwe.
