A woman in labour pains and her mother nearly lost their lives on Saturday when the ambulance transporting them from Mochudi to Princess Marina Hospital collided with a combi in Gaborone.

The accident happened at the four-way junction in Broadhurst Industrial near Metro wholesalers.

According to eyewitnesses, the ambulance was travelling at a very high speed without the siren and tried to go through red light when it caused the accident.

“The ambulance tried to beat the robots when they turned red and tried to swing through when it hit a coming combi, which spinned and hit a truck at the back,” said the eyewitness who refused to reveal his name.

He said that as the ambulance hit the truck, the pregnant woman came flying through the back door followed by her mother.

“The lady was actually naked when she hit the road. She was on her way to deliver at the Princess Marina hospital,” said another eye-witness who added that blood was oozing from the woman’s mouth when she tried to breath. Everyone at the scene feared for her and the baby’s lives. Speaking at the scene,

According to Superintendent Mbuyiselo Guga of the Broadhurst Police Station, said investigations are still under way but it appears like the ambulance driver is the one who caused the accident.

“According to the investigations that I made after the accident, it looks like the ambulance got in the way of the other vehicles which had the right of way,” Guga said.

He added that the ambulance’s siren was not on to alert the other drivers to make way.

He said the pregnant woman suffered multiple injuries but her situation was stabilising at the Princess Marina Hospital, while the mother suffered a leg injury. The driver of the ambulance suffered minor injuries. Apart from the shock, no one was hurt from the other vehicles.
