Ngoma targets Masisi’s campaign manager

FRANCISTOWN: City Mayor, Peter Ngoma has applied to the High Court to compel his rival’s campaign manager to respond to a P250 000 lawsuit he launched for defamation of character. The Mayor has accused Ignatius Moswaane, the campaign strategist for his political rival and Francistown West MP Tshelang Masisi of defamation. Ngoma who is the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) chairman of the northern region lost twice to Masisi in the party primaries.

Shortly after the second loss, he sued Moswaane saying that the political strategist made sure he was defeated by Masisi through defamation. Ngoma said Moswaane’s speech at a rally in Monarch sounded the death-knell of his hopes of beating Masisi. He cites Moswaane’s claim that he (Ngoma) was sponsored by the party Central Committee to the tune of P30,000 in the primaries as part of the reason of his defeat. Ngoma also feels that Moswaane’s description of his campaign as dirty made him lose to Masisi.

“The defamatory statement was meant to diminish the willingness of the others to associate with the plaintiff and caused him to be exposed to hatred, undue ridicule and contempt. As a result of the defendant’s utterances, which were just seven days before the re-run of elections in the West constituency, the client lost out,” Ngoma’s lawyers point out in the summons issued early this month after Moswaane failed to respond to the lawsuit.

Contacted for comment Ngoma said he gave all the instructions to his attorney and there was nothing he can say. “I don’t have any comment in relation to the case. My lawyers are handling everything. They are the ones who can comment on the issue,” said Ngoma.

Moswaane however expressed shock at the Mayor’s action. “I talked to Ngoma after seeing the lawsuit, suggesting that the issue could be solved between the two of us for the sake of the party but to my surprise, he is now dragging me to court,” he said. He revealed that he would respond through his lawyer and expressed pity for Ngoma, whom he said was causing problems for himself by engaging lawyers because he was going to lose the case. “I said nothing wrong about Ngoma and it is a pity that as fellow democrats, we could be dancing in court instead of concentrating on recruiting people to the party for the general elections which are just around the corner. The whole action is going to disturb people and Ngoma as the chairman of the region should be working on uniting the party and accept that he lost,” said Moswaane who added that the Mayor is very pivotal in bringing BDP supporters together.

“Ngoma is highly needed by the party to instill order. As for losing, Ngoma should learn to accept defeat,” he said.
