DEMOCRACY, Botswana’s founding president Seretse Khama once said, is like a tree that needs constant nurturing to grow and thrive. This places a responsibility on everyone who cherishes Botswana’s democracy to play their part to ensure that it grows and thrives. None bears more responsibility for the defence of this culture than the youth because the reins of government will ultimately pass to them.

There is reason to worry, therefore, when young people hatch schemes and plots that contradict the democratic spirit and practice that has become a way of life for the people of this country.

For the sake of Botswana’s democracy, let the BDP youth members decide for themselves who their next leaders will be.
