BULAWAYO: A Motswana woman was last week jailed for 18 months for illegal possession of dagga by a Plumtree magistrate. Her male colleague with whom she was facing the same charge was aquitted.

The woman, Monyahti Bahomotsi, is said to have travelled to Bulawayo and spent a night at a hotel with the man, Vincent Modongo. The following day they drove to Makokoba suburb with the intention of buying mbanje (dagga). The State alleges that they later bought six kilogrammes of mbanje.

After buying the illicit drug they drove towards Botswana via Plumtree.

Before they got to the border post they stopped with the intention of hiding the mbanje in the bonnet of the car they were travelling in. However, a police officer on routine patrol spotted them in the act, resulting in their arrest and subsequent appearance in court.

Mudongo pleaded not guilty and defended himself saying that he did not know Bahomotsi, neither did he know what was in the parcel they were caught trying to stuff into the bonnet. He said he had only given her a lift.

Plumtree resident magistrate, Sheila Nazombe, did not find a case against him and set him free but jailed Bahomotsi.
