THE Botswana National Front (BNF) appeals board met last night to determine the fate of the incumbent Gaborone West MP, Robert Molefhabangwe. Molefhabangwe had appealed to the Central Committee after losing the BNF parliamentary primary elections to the incumbent Gaborone city mayor, Harry Mothei. Molefhabangwe confirmed to Mmegi last night that his appeal came before the board.

``I was called to the hearing and I went,’’ he said.

He however could not be drawn into discussing the specifics saying the matter is still under consideration.

While he had never made public his specific complaint it has been surmised that the crux of his complaint concerned the conduct of the elections.

According to the BNF’s Executive Secretary, James Mathokgwane, the appeals board ‘s verdict will be final and binding.

In an earlier interview Molefhabangwe had told Mmegi that he believed so much in the strength of his case but was prepared to accept whatever verdict is handed down.

The BNF legislator gained political traction after two of his motions resulted in commissions of inquiry set up by the national assembly.

He made startling allegations on what he termed improper allocation of at molapo crossing. He alleged that some ministers may have been involved in the illicit land deals.

“The appeals board is far removed and very much independent from the central committee,” he said.

Mathokgwane said he would not know when the appeals board’s decision would be made.

“Only the appeals board knows. We will just wait for their report like everybody else,” he said.

He further confirmed that the appeals board would hear a number of other cases that have been passed to them including an appeal by Gaborone North MP, Michael Mzwinila.

Mzwinila ‘s case was thrown out of the window by the party’s electoral commission. Some of the appeals that are expected to come before the appeals board include one by Kwenantle Gaseitsiwe in Kanye. Gaseitsiwe lodged a complaint after losing to Calvin Batsile.

The BNF appeals board is said to be chaired by Gaborone based attorney Victor Moupo and its Secretary is former unionist and now University of Botswana academic, Gaobotswe Lebitsa.
