THE Director of Information has refused to react to opposition claims that the state media is biased in favour of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Habuji Sosome also declined to confirm or deny that there are serious problems at the state media. He rebuffed Mmegi claiming that the issue of the bias of the government-controlled press has been covered by other media. He failed to confirm or deny reports that the staff at the Department of Information and Broadcasting work under immense pressure from the Minister of Communications Science and Technology Boyce Sebetela.

The Minister is said to have a penchant for grossly interfering with the work of state journalists. Some say he has become an alternate editor of the government media. Sensing that professional journalists are not easily manipulated for political reason, the department is reported to have resorted to recruiting untrained and unprofessional staff.
