Opinion/Letters
Regaining our lost identity and image
RECENTLY, Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa lampooned the West for defining values; be they social, political or economic for Africans. This amused and fascinated the proponents of African Renaissance like me. Put simply, Mkapa is decrying the impact of neo-colonialism that Africa is still subjected to, and I give him due credit.

Even the Bible preaches corporal punishment
Idiffer with Ditshwanelo when they say, “Corporal punishment is not the answer” (Mmegi 17/08/04). The organisation is opposed to the use of corporal punishment in the home, in schools and as a judicial measure.

Ditshwanelo should face reality
I would like to take issue with Ditshwanelo on their bleeding heart attitude to corporal punishment. As applied in Botswana (i.e. a few strokes with a rough-cut moretlwa stick - at the traditional court), it is the most appropriate punishment for men accused of drunkenness, vandalism, minor theft, insulting behaviour, assault (including wife-beating) and other similar offences.
