The recently held Botswana Teachers Union ( BTU) competitions offered an interesting perspective as the conductors baton was handed down to the next generation.

An African alternative to “Jazz”
The compelling question that confronts African musicians - Batswana in particular - is whether the title “jazz” accurately categorises the music they play. More importantly, it has to be considered whether, in this “dog-eat-dog” capitalist world, the title of “jazz” helps to advance the commercial interests of the music to the advantage of the African musicians, or not.

Author trades Africa for Edinburgh
