“Since the recent release of the Report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Land Allocations in Gaborone, questions have been raised by various members of the public about what steps government might undertake in response to the commission’s work,” said a statement from Eric Molale, permanent secretary to the president. “With respect to such understandable interest, this office would emphasise the need for government to respond to the serious issues raised by the report in a prudent and deliberative manner. It is thus not reasonable to expect that government can conclusively act on all of the issues raised by the report with immediate effect.”
Molale says having had the time to thoroughly read the report, Mogae appreciated the commission’s work in drawing government’s attention to a range of concerns about certain recent allocations of open spaces in Gaborone. “These concerns touch upon a variety of issues of an administrative and potentially legal nature, that in the interest of good governance can not, and in this instance certainly will not, be ignored.”
Molale points out that government’s assessment of the report will also include a detailed analysis of each of the cases highlighted in the report. “Where appropriate, any outcomes of such analysis will be referred to the relevant authorities for full investigation and possible action, for example Attorney General’s Chambers, Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime, Police Service, and Ministry of Lands,” the statement says.
