Ramotswa hosts crucial BAA marathon

Botswana Athletics Association (BAAA) will be hosting a half marathon on Sunday from 7am, in Ramotswa. BAAA spokesman, Ipolokeng Ramatshaba, said the aim of the event is to select two teams to represent the country at the Southern African Championships and International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World half marathon respectively.

The regional championships will be held in Zimbabwe on October 2 while the IAAF event takes place in New Delhi, India eight days later. Ramatshaba said that they will select the best runners to hoist the country’s flag high following the failure to win a single medal at this year’s Olympics.

He added that with the regional and IAAF events taking place almost the same week, they are forced to select two teams. Ramatshaba said that they will choose about three athletes for the IAAF half marathon and about five for the Zimbabwe event.

“When selecting the teams, we will not only be looking at who got what position, but also how they run because we need athletes who can compete and bring something to the country at the end of the day,” he said.

Prominent marathoners like Tiyapo Maso and Gabaleme Moloko from the BDF will take part.
