How to deal with 130 000 elephants? Part 1
WE probably have 130 000 elephants living with us, now, mainly in the north. That’s more than any other country has, anywhere on earth. There’s one of them for every 4.5 square kilometres, overall, against about 3 people for every square km. In the north, at 123 000 odd, their density is much higher than nationally. In 1990, there were 55 000, and the official view - in the Elephant Management Plan of 1991 - was that their number should be kept at 60 000, requiring the “removal” of 3 000 per year to sustain it.

The need for election boycott
THOSE who study the science of politics teach us that the fairness of elections cannot be proved on polling day alone. Free and fair elections start with a democratic national constitution. It is common knowledge that our constitution is far behind that of neighbouring countries like Namibia and South Africa.

A march for democracy
“IN ordinary times the state, be it monarchical or democratic, elevates itself above the nation, and history is made by specialists in that line of business – kings, ministers, bureaucrats, parliamentarians, journalists. But at those crucial moments when the old order becomes irrelevant to the masses, they break down the barriers excluding them from the political arena, sweep aside their traditional representatives, and create by their own interference, the initial groundwork for a new regime”.

Childish parents
The interview has taken a different turn as Smooch puts Lerato on the spotlight, asking probing and groping questions about her sexuality. Yes, indeed, things have taken a different phekelo. But our maiden from America is as calm as they come. “What? You want to know if I am a virgin?” she asks, without wanting to sound shocked.
