In her keynote address at the ceremony, Dr Gloria Somolekae, chairperson of the Vision 2016 Council, said the name of RAG club is embedded in Vision 2016.
“It shows the extent to which the values enshrined in the Vision are being taken seriously by this school, students and the community,” she said.
The club was hailed for its spirit of volunteerism. Somolekae said it is rare nowadays to find people, especially youth, who are ready to give their time and energy to voluntary activities. She implored those at the ceremony to take cue from the compassionate students and teachers and open their hearts to give material support and love to the society’s needy and poor.
Shanganani RAG donated six boxes of clothes and groceries to six children from under-priviledged backgrounds. The goods have been bought after financial contributions by the business community, who donated cash amounting to P1 300.
Somolekae thanked the teachers for their diligence in moulding students into humane and caring future leaders.
“Your efforts which are manifested today in this event are worthwhile and deserves commending. It clearly shows that you have understood and taken seriously the significance of Vision 2016, especially the third pillar which underscores the need for a nation that is compassionate and caring. Today’s event marks your desire to eliminate poverty in all its facets,” she said.
Before stepping down from the podium, she donated a cheque of P300 to the club.
The club coordinator, who is also the deputy school head, Angela Matlhape, said they formed RAG after realising that they had among them, students who came from underprivileged backgrounds.
“Some of them came to school without shoes, others with tattered school uniforms. As a school, we are morally bound to see to it that we partake in the social and economic upliftment of our society, so we saw it fit to form an organization aimed at remembering and giving the less fortunate in our community,” she said.
